Extreme Beers (No Comments)

Extreme Beers— Link to a NYtimes article about extremely hoppy beers. My favorite quote from the article is this:

 “The hoppiest beer?” Garrett asked. “It’s a fairly idiotic pursuit, like a chef saying, ‘This is the saltiest dish.’ Anyone can toss hops in a pot, but can you make it beautiful?”

Now I have to agree with that statement. I fully admit that I am not a fan of extremely bitter beers (though I am starting to develop a taste). I do, however, appreciate a hoppy beer from the sense that there are many which I sip and think ‘hey someone might really like this’. Sadly, I think some folks really take it overboard and think of hops useage as somesort of a contest– the result are beers which are so bitter they make you pucker and sneer. These are in no way shape or form what I would consider good beer. However, if you have ever had a really hoppy beer which uses them in a balanced manner where the beer has aroma, fresh hoppy flavor, and bitterness (though not extreme) this is like an art form. It is nearly impossible to master, but to those that do kudos.


Hops Shortage (No Comments)

Well, I’m finally feeling the effects of the Hops Shortage. I was working out an order for my next couple of batches of beer, and both of the places that I order from only have Cascade leaf hops. It’s not the worst thing, but I was really hoping for Hallertau, Tetnang, and Fuggle for my next few batches. It looks like I am going to be making a Belgian Strong Ale, a Munich Style Lager, and perhaps a Doppelbock next. Williams Brewing is claiming that they will have several varieies of plugs available next week, so I am going to hold off ordering. I won’t have time to brew this weekend anyway.

You may have noticed that I didn’t mention hop pellets. I really haven’t been happy with the results when I’ve used pellets in the past. I know that most commercial brewers, even microbrewers use them, but I suspect that they have better results because they do a better job of removing stuff from the wort before fermentation.
